December 2009

A Note From Dave

Dear North Market Shopper

The Market is blessed with hundreds of unique, fresh and local choices. During the month of December and all through the holidays we tend to focus on our favorites. Well, here are a few of mine:

1. Blackstrap Praline Ice Cream from Jeni. Maybe the best ever. While it lasts. When it’s gone, I’ll “settle” for Brown Butter Almond Brittle.
2. Bacon from David and Cheryl at Bluescreek Farm Meats. Not just bacon, this is BACON!
3. A gorgeous piece of the freshest salmon from The Fish Guys and my Gravlax recipe for the easiest, most elegant holiday taste ever.
4. A blue cheese recommendation from Mike at Curds & Whey. He’s got a million of them.
5. A warm bowl of Pho and Thang’s smile on a cold winter’s day from Lac Viet Market.

Bring your aspiring young baker or chef to the Dispatch Kitchen at the North Market this Saturday, December 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and let them exercise their artistic abilities decorating a cookie provided by Mozart's North Market Bakery. Columbus Dispatch Food Editor Robin Davis will be on hand to lend her expert cookie-decorating advice. The Cookie Decorating Party is free, one cookie per child to decorate while supplies last!

School of Cooking Classes make great gifts!

Cooking classes make the perfect gift for your favorite foodie and they are value-priced at $50 each or $125 for 3 classes. The School of Cooking even offers opportunities for your aspiring young chef with hands-on kid’s classes centered on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day offered at $35 each.  And we have an exciting new collaboration with the Dine Originals Chef Series. Chefs from fourteen of the Dine Originals’ outstanding restaurants will hold demonstration style classes which culminate in the sharing of the meal prepared with recipes provided for class participants to recreate the meal at home.
