Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Meet Jeni.

When Jeni dropped out of art school in the mid 1990s, she had been amassing a collection of essential oils. You could say she was obsessed with scent. She added cayenne essential oil to a store-bought milk chocolate ice cream, and she had discovered what she was passionate about: ice cream.

She opened Scream with a friend in the North Market, learned a lot about running a business—the hard way; Scream closed soon after it opened—then she put herself through Penn State’s renowned Ice Cream Short Course. That taught Jeni the science of ice cream, and she opened Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams here in the North Market in 2002. Standing on a concrete floor 12+ hours per day, she made and sold all the ice creams herself. From her humble start at the North Market, Jeni now has 15 shops here in Columbus, Chagrin Falls, Nashville, Chicago, and Atlanta, a thriving home shipping business, and the wholesale shelves in groceries around the country. Jeni still builds her ice creams from the ground up ice leading to praise from press around the country: The Washington Post (“sublime”), Saveur (“revolutionary”), and other major publications throughout the world.

what's her recipe?

Exquisite grass-grazed Ohio cream; Ohio wildflower honey; biodynamic yogurt; whole fruits, vegetables, and herbs from Columbus and from around the world. Top-shelf ingredients in year-round flavors include: Ndali Estate vanilla (Uganda); Middle West Spirits whiskey (Columbus); Seven Stars Farm yogurt (Pennsylvania); Askinosie bean-to-bar chocolate (Missouri); Stauf's coffee (Columbus); Middle West Spirits' Whiskey (Columbus). Jeni's team bakes, peels, chops, purees, slices, and pulverizes almost everything they use to make the ice creams Time called “the best in America.” Limited flavors have included Loveless Biscuits + Peach Jam (inspired by the biscuits made by Loveless Cafe in Nashville) and Huckleberry Frozen Yogurt (made with huckleberries picked from the wild near Mount St. Helens).

her inspiration?

The artist Wayne Thiebaud. Her grandmother Bette, an artist. The gleaming paint jobs on muscle cars. Movies, books, pop songs, opera and dance, and cultural events. Columbus, Ohio. Fannie Farmer. Traveling. Pretty much everything around her on any given day.

her latest adventure?

Opening scoop shops in Chicago, Atlanta, and a second one in Nashville. "We're thrilled for the opportunity to share what we do with Ohio ingredients with even more people."

where can you find her?

On the east side of the market, right across from the Little Eater Produce & Provisions, and just inside the main doors serving Salty Caramel ice cream (and 25 or so others flavors) by the taste, scoop, and pint, every day.
