How long have you been farming?
I’ve been farming full time since graduating from OSU in 1998, first just dairy farming and grain farming, then moved into full time retailing of fruits and vegetables.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We’ve been coming to North Market for about 4 or 5 years.

What are your signature crops?
Our main crops are tomatoes, sweet corn, strawberries, and melons, but we grow significant quantities of many other vegetables.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I like being able to connect with our customers, and see who is actually consuming our produce, and getting retail prices for what we grow.

How did you become a farmer?
I am a fourth generation farmer on our land. Until 2001, I was a dairy farmer, then I began selling fruits and vegetables at Farmers’ Markets, and saw better profit margins in produce than in dairy, not to mention, I enjoyed it much more.

Do you have any special farming practices?
We use mostly conventional farming practices, with some no-till, and non-pesticide and chemical use. Our website explains our practices and farming philosophy in more detail.

How long have you been farming?
I’ve been farming since 1974.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I first came to the North Market at the old Quonset Hut from 1983-1988. Then I came back in 2000 when we started bringing our kids with us. Back then Curtis was 2, Charlie was 6 and Amy was 10.

What are your signature crops?
Yellow and red watermelons, broccoli, cauliflower, 4th of July tomatoes (in fact, I’m picking them right now), sweet corn, many cut flowers including zinnias, astors and our new featured product as of last year is candy sweet onions.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I like the people at the North Market and I like selling to the kids there. The kids just cheer me up.

How did you become a farmer?
My mother’s family were truck farmers and my mom used to help me when I started out, so I suppose it came from that side of the family. “Truck farmers” is the old term for vegetable farmers who grow crops and sell them off the back of the truck. My grandfather on my mom’s side used to sell at Central Market. My daughter Amy started growing and selling flowers when we came back to North Market in 2000 and she’s made a pretty good business of it. Now she’s majoring in horticulture at Penn State. She just completed an internship at Bear Creek Farms in Oklahoma. They have 6 greenhouses and 4 acres of cut flowers to wholesale to florists. I predict that she’ll be our next big flower grower!

Do you have any special farming practices?
We grow everything on raised bed plastic with drip irrigation that allows us to conserve water and get nutrients directly to the plants.

How long have you been farming?
We harvested our first crop in 1974.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
The North Market has been our primary market since 1989.

What are your signature crops?
Our primary crop is apples, but we supplement them with seedless grapes, blueberries, peaches, plums, and cider.

What is important to you about selling at the North Market?
We have direct marketed our crops since 1975. Early on Muskingum, Perry, and Guernsey Counties were our farmers market of choice. Once we had our first big grape crop in 1989 we discovered a larger market was needed. A marketer in New Albany encouraged us to try North Market. Success came slowly at first. Now however, we feel a part of the North Market community.

Abundant apples from the Thomas Family Orchard. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2006. All rights reserved. How did you become farmers?
The Thomas Family Orchard is the 8th & 9th generation since 1809 to farm Brush Creek Township in Muskimgun County. We quickly found that dairy was not for us and do not miss the baling of hay and planting of corn. Dad always said money didn’t grow on trees, but I set out to prove him wrong.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Our farm works hard to control birds with netting and raccoons with electric fencing. Our goal is to bring a quality tree or vine ripened product to our consumer.

How long have you been farming?
I was raised on a farm so technically I have been farming my entire life! In 1975 my wife and I bought the present farm where we now live and have raised our family. Farming has not been our primary vocation however, until I retired in 2009. I was a high school counselor and in education for 35 years.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We started coming to the North Market in 2002 in order to help our five kids pay for their college education. Each of them have contributed in some way to our success here at the North Market. You have probably seen most of them, their spouses and children at one time or another.

What are your signature crops?
Our signature crop is heirloom tomatoes. This year we’ve grown 14 different varieties- the most popular being Red Brandywine and Cherokee Purple. We also have early potatoes (Yukon God and Red Norland), blackberries, brown eggs, Scarlet and Grey popcorn, and stone-ground flour and cornmeal. We also bring homemade Granola and Whole Grain Pancake Mix. We harvested honey from our bee hives for the first time this Spring, and are able to offer it for sale as well. In the Fall we will bring pears, paw paws, and dried heirloom tomatoes in addition to our grains, granola, and pancake mix.

The Barr Family of Quiver Full Farm. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2009. All rights reserved. What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
Selling “agriculture” is part of the farm market experience. So many people we come in contact with have roots in agriculture and they love to share their memories and experiences. This interest from our customers allows us to share about our farm, family, and produce. We enjoy what we do together as a family and it’s wonderful to have customers that appreciate it! We love the North Market because of the atmosphere and the encouragement to buy things local. Our farm is about 30 minutes south of Columbus so we encourage people to visit us, and to learn how their food is grown. The North Market is the only venue we use to sell our products.

How did you become a farmer?
It was never my intention to continue in the farm tradition of many generations, but as it has been said ‘you can take the boy out of farm, but you can’t take the farm out of a boy’. When my wife and I had an opportunity to buy land adjacent to my parents we kind of got suckered into it. We never regretted it, however. We wanted to raise our family and be as self-sufficient as possible on the farm.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Mostly hard work and sweat every day. Nothing is high tech (except the computer we printed this on). Most of the equipment we use is antique! We avoid using any kind of chemicals on what we grow-for our own heath, as well as that of our customers.

*Saturday Sampling: Chef Jeff White of Barcelona Restaurant will be making Pintxo: bread with tomatoes, jamon serrano and manchego cheese on Saturday at the Quiver Full Farm stand from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

How long have you been farming?
Oakvale is a 5th generation dairy farm. Our family has deep agricultural roots in the Central Ohio area dating back to 1853. We appreciate where we live and we are proud to serve as stewards of the environment.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We have been coming to the North Market for six years.

What are your signature products?
Our handcrafted Farmstead Gouda is an authentic Dutch style cheese. For seven years Oakvale has provided an award winning premium cheese respected on a local and national platform. Our cheese is made solely from the milk of our grass fed registered Holstein cows. Our milk is a grade A premium quality which produces a smooth buttery gouda with a creamy texture. We make regular, aged, caraway, jalapeno, habanero heifer and smoked gouda. We have recently begun making flavored cream cheeses as well.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market Farmers Market?
We love that we are able to reach and directly interact with so many people in the Columbus area at the farmers market. Since we sample and talk to our customers face to face we receive instant and excellent feedback about whether people like our cheeses.

How did you become farmers?
We were looking for a way to supplement our income yet remain on the farm. Since our background is in dairy farming, cheesemaking seemed like a natural transition! Our daughter, Elizabeth, took a short course at the University of Wisconsin on cheesemaking. She then studied with Margaret Morris (of Glengarry Fine Cheese) in Ontario, Canada and finally, made the rounds with various cheesemakers in Vermont to hone the art of cheese production. It is now a family affair and our other daughter, Dena is our sales representative.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Our herd of Holstein dairy cows is fed a diet of hay, grass and a small amount of grain. The cows graze on 20 acres of pasture and are not given antibiotics or growth hormones. The total farm consists of 462 acres of which 400 acres are tillable and we are currently also growing soybeans and corn.

*Chef Tricia Wheeler, Editor and Publisher of Edible Columbus will be sampling Garden Tomato & Herb Bruschetta topped with Jalapeno Gouda from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Oakvale Farmstead Cheese stand this Saturday, July 31.

We have been keeping bees for 7 years. We started in 2003 when Jayne bought Isaac a beehive for Christmas. We have doubled our hives every year and we now have over 100 hives.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We have been coming to the North Market for 3 years.

What are your signature crops?
We produce pure raw honey, herbal infused honey, beeswax candles, bee pollen, comb honey, chunk honey and handcrafted soap made with our own beeswax, honey and herbs. We also sell fresh cut flowers and arrange flowers for weddings. Our signature item is our black locust honey, which we take off the hives in early Spring. It has a light, delicate taste that is unique, as not many beekeepers extract honey in early Spring. We also started a pumpkin patch this year.

Honeyrun Farm. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2009. All rights reserved. What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
We love the atmosphere of the North Market. Every vendor has such unique items to sell and the community it creates is great. We love the music, the loyal customers, the festivals, and the inside vendors, too.

How did you become farmers?
Both Isaac and Jayne grew up on farms and love working outside. Jayne met Isaac’s sister Becky at college and they dreamed up a plan to work together to grow produce someday. Becky introduced Jayne to Isaac, they got married, and eventually Honeyrun Farm was born. Now Becky handles all the produce, Isaac works with the bees, and Jayne grows flowers and makes soap.

Do you have any special farming practices?
We use no chemicals in our beehives, and practice Integrated Pest Management techniques to help our hives ward off mites and disease. We also extract our honey seasonally so that our customers can taste the different floral sources of the nectar. We currently are selling a mild, delicate Spring Honey, a dark, rich and robust flavored Fall Honey, and will be extracting Summer Honey in the next few weeks.

How long have you been farming?
I began farming in 1985. We planted 2,000 apple trees and 25,000 strawberry plants for a u-pick.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I started bringing apples to the north market in 1989 or 1990.

What are your signature crops?
We now sell flowers and produce in season. We start with asparagus and peonies in the spring. We grow a variety of flowers including sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, delphinium, celosia and lilies. In the fall we also have oriental pears and lots of hand made wreaths of bittersweet.
New this year is our free range pork including brats, Italian sausage, breakfast sausage, bacon and smoked pork loin.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
Knowing and having direct contact with customers is very important to me.

How did you become a farmer?
I became a farmer because it sounded fun. I didn’t realize how much work it would be.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Though we aren’t certified organic we use very few non-organic methods. I believe the land has to be treated as a living thing.

2 lbs. Beech Meadow Farm drumsticks, skin removed

2 cups buttermilk
4 cups Panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
teaspoon dried thyme

How long have you been farming?
I have been farming for 17 years.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I have been coming to the North Market since 1997.

What are your signature crops?
I specialize in gourmet lettuce mixes, heirloom tomatoes and cherry tomato mixes.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I love talking to people about food and farming, hearing their likes and dislikes and sharing my farm news. The market recharges me for another week in the fields.

How did you become a farmer?
Even as a kid growing up 35 miles outside New York City, I wanted a patch of land in the country. I started “farming” on one-fifth of an acre in my Columbus backyard. When I ran out of yard, I bought a farm in Johnstown and a 50-year-old tractor. Six years ago, I moved to a 67-acre farm in Washington Court House. I’ve learned most of what I know from other farmers and through trial and error. I now grow 7 acres of produce. I love the hard work farming demands, its mental challenges and the sense of accomplishment that comes with each week’s harvest.

Do you have any special farming practices?
I don’t use any chemical pesticides.

*Chef Paul Yow of Barcelona Restaurant and Bar will be sampling sliced tomatoes with Spanish blue cheese and sherry vinegar reduction at the Bridgman Farm stand from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. this Saturday, July 3.
