North Market celebrates 20th Farmers’ Festival!

The North Market Farmers’ Market was established at the old market in the Quonset Hut in 1979. In 1981 the first celebration of Ohio farmers was held there and twenty years later we still have grand cause to celebrate! Come to the North Market for a Saturday of farm-tastic fun during the 20th Farmers’ Festival on Saturday, August 13th. The annual event held at the prime of the Ohio growing season will highlight bushels of locally grown farm-fresh produce, a Homemade Jam and Jelly Contest, an “Ugly Tomato” Contest, the “You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to” Chef Challenge, children’s activities, cooking demonstrations and live music.

The North Market Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest and largest in central Ohio, featuring more than 20 farmers offering an array of locally-grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, honey and herbs. Farms scheduled to participate this year include Anderson Orchard, Blossom Acre’s Produce, Breezy Knoll Farm, Bridgman Farm, Ehmann and Sons Greenhouse, Honeyrun Farm, K & R Garden Fresh Produce, Oakvale Farmstead Cheese, Ohio Farm Direct, Oink Moo Cluck Farm, Thomas Family Orchard, Persinger Farm, Quiverfull Farm, Rhoads Farm Market, Rock Dove Farm, Shady Brook Farm, Somerset Greenhouse, Summer Thyme Farm, Toad Hill Farm, Toby Run Growers, The Wayward Seed Farm and Wishwell Farms Produce.

“We are proud to host the longest-running farmers’ market in Columbus at the North Market each Saturday morning during the growing season,” said David Wible, Executive Director of the North Market. “As a ‘sell what you grow’ market our farmers offer high quality homegrown produce nurtured right here in Ohio and we think that’s something worth celebrating!”

Special Farmers’ Market demonstration this week on container gardening. CONTAIN THIS: How Your Urban Garden Grows with Erika Hess

“At a time where prices are high and incomes are low, most of us have become champion comparison shoppers. We navigate not only the streets of the city but the aisles of the grocery store. Unfortunately for many, the first thing to go is high quality produce. Last year I began my adventure into urban gardening. From window containers, a 3 foot plot of land, to kid’s swimming pool: growing your own produce is simple and cheap when you know how to do it. I want to help others save money while not having to sacrifice eating high quality food. Good food shouldn’t just be for those who can afford it.

Along with teaching others how to grow their own produce, I want to teach how to compost on a small scale (trust me, it’s way cleaner and easier than you think) and how to use recycled containers such as water bottles, coffee cans and jars to keep costs low. Education is not only power but saved cash and nutritious!

For one month, (or longer if money allows) I will travel with my goods in tow and set up a table to teach/demonstrate what I have described above. I will demonstrate how to make containers out of recycled bottles, how to grow lettuce and herbs in these containers, composting and giving out mini how-to booklets illustrated by yours truly. Those that want to get dirty can plant with me and leave with their own seedling! How cool, right? Your own little plant, THAT YOU CAN EAT!”

Erika will be at the North Market Farmers’ Market on Saturday from 8AM-2PM

How long have you been farming?
I was raised on a farm so technically I have been farming my entire life! In 1975 my wife and I bought the present farm where we now live and have raised our family. Farming has not been our primary vocation however, until I retired in 2009. I was a high school counselor and in education for 35 years.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We started coming to the North Market in 2002 in order to help our five kids pay for their college education. Each of them have contributed in some way to our success here at the North Market. You have probably seen most of them, their spouses and children at one time or another.

What are your signature crops?
Our signature crop is heirloom tomatoes. This year we’ve grown 14 different varieties- the most popular being Red Brandywine and Cherokee Purple. We also have early potatoes (Yukon God and Red Norland), blackberries, brown eggs, Scarlet and Grey popcorn, and stone-ground flour and cornmeal. We also bring homemade Granola and Whole Grain Pancake Mix. We harvested honey from our bee hives for the first time this Spring, and are able to offer it for sale as well. In the Fall we will bring pears, paw paws, and dried heirloom tomatoes in addition to our grains, granola, and pancake mix.

The Barr Family of Quiver Full Farm. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2009. All rights reserved. What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
Selling “agriculture” is part of the farm market experience. So many people we come in contact with have roots in agriculture and they love to share their memories and experiences. This interest from our customers allows us to share about our farm, family, and produce. We enjoy what we do together as a family and it’s wonderful to have customers that appreciate it! We love the North Market because of the atmosphere and the encouragement to buy things local. Our farm is about 30 minutes south of Columbus so we encourage people to visit us, and to learn how their food is grown. The North Market is the only venue we use to sell our products.

How did you become a farmer?
It was never my intention to continue in the farm tradition of many generations, but as it has been said ‘you can take the boy out of farm, but you can’t take the farm out of a boy’. When my wife and I had an opportunity to buy land adjacent to my parents we kind of got suckered into it. We never regretted it, however. We wanted to raise our family and be as self-sufficient as possible on the farm.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Mostly hard work and sweat every day. Nothing is high tech (except the computer we printed this on). Most of the equipment we use is antique! We avoid using any kind of chemicals on what we grow-for our own heath, as well as that of our customers.

How long have you been farming?
Oakvale is a 5th generation dairy farm. Our family has deep agricultural roots in the Central Ohio area dating back to 1853. We appreciate where we live and we are proud to serve as stewards of the environment.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We have been coming to the North Market for six years.

What are your signature products?
Our handcrafted Farmstead Gouda is an authentic Dutch style cheese. For seven years Oakvale has provided an award winning premium cheese respected on a local and national platform. Our cheese is made solely from the milk of our grass fed registered Holstein cows. Our milk is a grade A premium quality which produces a smooth buttery gouda with a creamy texture. We make regular, aged, caraway, jalapeno, habanero heifer and smoked gouda. We have recently begun making flavored cream cheeses as well.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market Farmers Market?
We love that we are able to reach and directly interact with so many people in the Columbus area at the farmers market. Since we sample and talk to our customers face to face we receive instant and excellent feedback about whether people like our cheeses.

How did you become farmers?
We were looking for a way to supplement our income yet remain on the farm. Since our background is in dairy farming, cheesemaking seemed like a natural transition! Our daughter, Elizabeth, took a short course at the University of Wisconsin on cheesemaking. She then studied with Margaret Morris (of Glengarry Fine Cheese) in Ontario, Canada and finally, made the rounds with various cheesemakers in Vermont to hone the art of cheese production. It is now a family affair and our other daughter, Dena is our sales representative.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Our herd of Holstein dairy cows is fed a diet of hay, grass and a small amount of grain. The cows graze on 20 acres of pasture and are not given antibiotics or growth hormones. The total farm consists of 462 acres of which 400 acres are tillable and we are currently also growing soybeans and corn.

*Chef Tricia Wheeler, Editor and Publisher of Edible Columbus will be sampling Garden Tomato & Herb Bruschetta topped with Jalapeno Gouda from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Oakvale Farmstead Cheese stand this Saturday, July 31.
