Coming soon to the North Market

The North Market is pleased to welcome a trio of new businesses that round out our merchant mix and put our occupancy at capacity:

The Barrel and Bottle  Jen Burton and Collin Castore will soon open a new beer and wine shop in the North Market. They will feature more than 300 imported and domestic wines, international and craft beers and a tap station for filling growlers of craft beer from kegs. Take a peek into the shop to check out the ongoing renovation!

Clever Crow Pizza  Gary Robinette and wife Brooke Howell-Robinette will be turning out their hearty cornmeal crust pizzas that were featured in the Travel Channel show, No Reservations. The couple also smokes and cures their own meats and pickles and cures local vegetables for toppings on the pizzas which will be available for dine-in, carryout or take-and-bake one day soon!

Brêzel   Maria Gentile and Brittany Baum have been selling their scrumptious Bavarian-style pretzels at farmers markets and events for the past year while they sought a permanent home…and now they have one on the south aisle of the North Market between Omega Artisan Baking and Clever Crow Pizza! Look for the ladies to open with their hand-rolled pretzels in mid to late December.

How long have you been farming?
I was born into a farm family.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I have been coming to the North Market for 7 years.

What are your signature crops?
We plant summer squash (zucchini, yellow squash and patty pan), peppers, beans, eggplant, okra, sweet corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fall pumpkins (my favorite), peanut pumpkins, gourds and winter squash (acorn, butternut, delicata, hubbard, spaghetti and Marina de Chioggia)

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I enjoy seeing our local customers each week! The atmosphere at the North Market is awesome: the music is pleasant, the festivals and other vendors make this a very interesting place for customers to shop and you can always find something different.

How did you become a farmer?
I know no other life than farm life. I was born into it and then married into it! It’s a wonderful way to raise a family. I began at a young age, raising feeder calves and selling sweet corn along our road to help with my college tuition. I was involved with 4-H and FFA in high school. In 1988 my husband and I had the opportunity to grow 120 acres of processing tomatoes for the Heinz Tomato Company and we did that for 7 years. From that experience we focused on raising fresh market vegetables. My husband also farms 800 acres of field corn and soybeans.

Do you have any special farming practices?
I raise all of my transplants in the greenhouse so that I can get them into the field early.

*Tricia Wheeler, chef and editor of Edible Columbus will be serving samples of pumpkin soup at the Persinger Farm stand this Saturday from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Drop by to see her and pick up the latest edition of Edible Columbus!

The North Market Harvest Festival is helping to kick off Local Matters Local Foods Week on Saturday, October 2. In addition to our usual extravaganza of harvest produce, baking contests, live music and kids’ activities, as part of their Local Foods Week celebration, Local Matters is working to pair local chefs with some of our farmers to do cooking demonstrations right out of their stalls.

This festival is a fun one for the kiddies with a plethora of activities and entertainment. Mark Wood will be twisting balloon animals and executing fancy rope tricks. Not to mention, if you are looking for a new four-legged friend, the Columbus Dog Connection will be on hand with adoptable dogs.

Enterprising customers have several opportunities to take home a prize in our Harvest Festival baking contests. In the pumpkin bread contest, entrants are invited to submit their version in loaf or muffin form. Farmers Market update for Saturday, September 11

Combs Fresh Herbs
Clelia Combs (with help from daughter Margaret)
Gahanna, OH

How long have you been farming?
I don’t really think of it as farming, to me it is gardening. I’ve been gardening ever since I was a young girl growing up in Italy.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I have been coming to the North Market for 22 years. I first started coming in 1988.

What are your signature crops?
Oh, I grow lots of things that remind me of Italy: basil, of course, tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula and spinach. I make a special pesto that I sell at the farmers market and salsa sometimes too.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I like the people that I meet here and that come to visit me every weekend.

How did you become a farmer?
I grew up in a family of florists and gardeners. My family was in the flower business. In the United States I started growing vegetables for my family, but eventually there was just too much and I started bringing the extra produce to the North Market.

Do you have any special farming practices?
I work very, very hard. I am dedicated to my garden and have to do a lot of weeding, especially this season as the weeds were terrible with the early rain. But gardening is a labor of love and I enjoy bringing the fruits of that labor to the North Market.

*Saturday Sampling: Chef Alana Shock of Alana’s Food & Wine will be sampling mixed vegetable risotto at the Combs Fresh Herb stand on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

How long have you been farming?
I’ve been farming full time since graduating from OSU in 1998, first just dairy farming and grain farming, then moved into full time retailing of fruits and vegetables.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We’ve been coming to North Market for about 4 or 5 years.

What are your signature crops?
Our main crops are tomatoes, sweet corn, strawberries, and melons, but we grow significant quantities of many other vegetables.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I like being able to connect with our customers, and see who is actually consuming our produce, and getting retail prices for what we grow.

How did you become a farmer?
I am a fourth generation farmer on our land. Until 2001, I was a dairy farmer, then I began selling fruits and vegetables at Farmers’ Markets, and saw better profit margins in produce than in dairy, not to mention, I enjoyed it much more.

Do you have any special farming practices?
We use mostly conventional farming practices, with some no-till, and non-pesticide and chemical use. Our website explains our practices and farming philosophy in more detail.
