North Market bids a fond farewell to a favorite farmer

After 23 years at the North Market Farmers’ Market selling the herbs, tomatoes, peppers, beans and greens lovingly grown in her Gahanna Garden, Clelia Combs has retired from her summer Saturday post. Born in Italy, Clelia grew up with a father who tended a garden that provided herbs, vegetables and fruit for his family of ten children to enjoy. She came to the United States in 1962 as a “war bride.” Clelia’s heritage was evident in the produce growing in her garden. She began years ago with a focus on herbs hence the name, “Combs Fresh Herbs.”

Clelia and her daughter, Margaret were faithfully front and center at the entrance to the farmers market every Saturday with a smile and a hug for their longtime following of farmers’ market shoppers. Her presence will be missed as will her proprietary pestos and salsas and the beautiful basil and tomatoes that she brought to market each week. We love you and will miss you Clelia!

Grillmasters Festival over Memorial Day Weekend

North Market will celebrate its sixth Grillmasters Festival over Memorial Day Weekend. The Saturday and Sunday event will emphasize grilling, techniques and sauces as well as putting a little bite into your recipes with spices and hot sauces. North Market Grillmasters Festival will take place May 28 and 29 and feature special barbeque and fiery foods vendors, cooking demonstrations, culinary contests, live music and entertainment for the kiddies.

On Saturday, customers are invited to demonstrate their BBQ prowess in an Amateur Barbeque Sauce Contest that will be judged by local BBQ sauce makers. First prize is $50 in North Market gift certificates. Returning in the “professional” category is the popular, “Thrilla at the Grilla.” Four chefs are given their own hibachis and charcoal then use their imagination as far as what they whip up on the grill. This year’s contestants include Josh Cook of Barrio Tapas, Andy Fields of Due Amici, John McLaughlin of Heartbreaking Dawns and David MacLennan of Latitude 41. Our discerning judges will choose a champion and the public can taste their creations. The winner will take home the title “Baron of Barbeque” and $200 in North Market gift certificates. On Sunday the activities of the day will commence with an amateur Salsa Fresca Contest with another winner taking home $50 in North Market gift certificates.

North Market Celebrates 15th Apron Gala

It’s time to summon up your creative side and assemble, abscond with or otherwise acquire an apron for the gastronomically legendary North Market Apron Gala. We’re not apron authorities, but through the years we’ve witnessed waist-tied attire that runs the gamut from naughty to nice, vintage to topical, unbiased to political and even some that resembled colorful creatures (the late, great Fred Holdridge and his flamingo, for instance). One of the nicer things about wearing an apron to the affair (aside from the prizes to be won) is that it nicely camouflages any inflated midsections that may arise from the fabulous feasting to be done. So get ready to tie one on at the 15th annual fundraiser for the North Market Development Authority. The Apron Gala will take place at the North Market on Saturday, May 21 from 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person.

Graze on delightful and delectable appetizers, main tastes and desserts, artfully prepared by our merchants. Enjoy assorted wines, Columbus Brewing Company micro-brews, soft drinks, coffee and tea, plus live music, a silent auction and other entertaining surprises. Prizes will be awarded for the night’s best aprons and special culinary awards to merchants for their gastronomic entries. As an added special treat, Tricia Wheeler, Chef and Editor of Edible Columbus will be creating canapés in the Dispatch Kitchen throughout the evening and giving away copies of her new local-foods-centric publication.

An extraordinary silent auction continues to be one of the most popular features of the evening. Up for bid are various themed packages highlighting market merchants, neighborhoods (like Downtown, the Short North, Grandview and German Village), sporting events (Blue Jackets, Columbus Crew, golf), and getaways. Each bundle will contain a host of amenities from theatre tickets and restaurant gift certificates to spa services, gourmet products and hotel stays. Attendees are encouraged to bring their checkbooks or credit cards to take advantage of the unique deals!

As the title of the event implies, all in attendance are encouraged to wear their favorite apron or create one in honor of the gala! Best male and female aprons will be selected and all guests wearing an apron will be entered into a drawing for a special prize. In case you lack the time and energy to create or buy your own apron, we’ll make it easy on you: commemorative aprons will be available on sale for $15 at the event.

Tickets are available online at www.NorthMarket.com or in person during Market hours in our 2nd floor business office. Heck, you can even call us at (614) 463-9664 and we’ll mail ’em to you.

Dear North Market Shopper,

Executive Director, David Wible and Board Member, John Dornback. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2009. All rights reserved. As I move about the community many individuals I encounter are not familiar with and, in fact, surprised to learn about the structure of North Market.

Not many people know that the North Market is operated by a not-for-profit organization, the North Market Development Authority (NMDA).  Our staff of four full-timers and three part-timers report to a 19-member board of directors who oversee the operation of the Market.

While the City of Columbus owns the building, it is the NMDA which attends to the oversight of the Market in our community.

Unlike typical commercial real estate management ventures or shopping center operations, the Market is operated to create low cost economic opportunities for small family-run businesses and farms.  It is also operated to maintain an old-world style of business that is instrumental in creating the atmosphere that is so unique to our Market.

The NMDA receives its operating dollars from three sources: merchant rent, parking revenue and fundraising.  As a not-for-profit organization, we look to fundraising to help us maintain our position of pride in the community.

On the evening of Saturday, May 22nd, North Market will play host to our biggest fundraising event of the year, the Apron Gala.  The Apron Gala is a casual and fun evening of great food, drink and entertainment.  Each year our merchants go all-out to serve up the very best they can offer.  It’s a true gastronomic evening.

Your $75 ticket is good for a full evening of appetizers, main courses, desserts and drinks personally served by our community of merchants.  Your ticket contribution also goes a long way in helping provide us with the funds so necessary to keep our Market great.

So, if you’re looking for something fun, delicious and rewarding to do on May 22nd you should pick up a ticket for the 14th Annual North Market Apron Gala.  You’ll be doing something great for the Market and something even better for your appetite.

Hope to see you at the Market and the Apron Gala.

Dave Wible

Executive Director

The Market Table Dinner

One of the most-sought-after prizes at our annual Apron Gala silent auction is the “Market Table Dinner.” It’s an intimate, after-hours, behind-the-scenes dinner for you and nine of your favorite people.

The affair is held in the Dispatch Kitchen, prepared by one of Columbus’ favorite chefs and served by the Market staff. This year’s Market Table maestro was board member and chef extraordinaire, John Dornback of Basi Italia.

Recent Board President emeritus Michelle Chippas and husband Glen Pritchard entertained four other couples at the Market Table this past Saturday night. Chef Dornback cooked up an exemplary five-course meal for those in attendance. Upon arrival the guests were greeted with glasses of Dibon sparkling wine and Scottish Salmon Tartare in Endive Boats:

Once the party had settled in the first course was served, a lovely seared scallop with roasted beet tapenade and mustard green pesto. At this time your intrepid blogger must have been too busy serving as she neglected to take a photo, but having tasted some of the “extras” I assure you it was a splendid start! I’ll make up for it with two photos of the second course. Chef Dornback scored and seared little disks of foie gras:

And served them on a bed of sauteed butter beans with sweet peppers and sherry wine. This course was accompanied by a Joel Gott Chardonnay.

Course number three was Lobster Risotto with fresh lemon, chives and marscapone. It was served with a Riesling who’s vintage I neglected to note (sorry).

The main course was a hearty Filet of Rib Eye served with parsnip potatoes and garnished with a wile mushroom and port wine sauce. Served with Pets Petit Sirah.

The evening was capped off with bowls of roasted berries lightly drizzled with balsamic vinegar:

And topped off with fresh whipped cream:

Many thanks to Michelle Chippas and Glen Pritchard for their support of the North Market through the Market Table purchase. And cheers to Chef John Dornback for creating an exceptional meal!

If this all sounds too good to be true, you too can bid on the Market Table Dinner and other fabulous silent auction items at the North Market Apron Gala. Save the date for this year’s bash: Saturday, May 16 from 7 - 10 p.m.
