Newsletter ~ May 2012

Dear North Market Shopper,

Shopping trends come and go. Buying behavior and patterns change over time. It’s something that I’ve noticed in my nearly 12 years here at the Market.

Here are some things that I have noticed over time and some tips that might make your shopping visit more pleasurable.

Saturdays are, by far, our busiest shopping day. I’ve noticed that our crowds tend to be arriving later in the morning. We stay busy from late morning through mid-afternoon. My tip is to start your shopping day early (first-thing). We open at 8:00 a.m. and if you get here by 9:00 a.m., you can be assured of the very best choices and a relatively wide-open Market. It also gives you the time for a cup of coffee and delicious baked good to kick off the day.

While we officially open at noon on Sundays, we unlock the doors at 10:00 a.m. for a “soft opening.” Many of our merchants are up and running before noon and it’s a great opportunity to grab a few things while the Market is quiet.

Read the rest of Dave’s note here⇒

Note: the Capital City Half-Marathon will take place this Saturday, May 5 with an expected 12,000+ runners. The race begins at 8 a.m. at Scioto Mile Park and finishes at Columbus Commons. The race is expected to impact early morning access to the Market as Vine Street East will have Quarter Marathon runners from approximately 8:10-8:45 and High Street will have Half Marathon runners from 8:40-9:30 a.m. Please plan your trips to the Market accordingly!

Market to Market this Saturday

Market to Market will take place this Saturday, May 5. Registration is $15 in advance (limited to 200 riders per market) and $20 at the door (EXTREMELY limited availability). The cost includes breakfast, a scoop of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream (at either location), an event t-shirt and a drawstring backpack filled with goodies and coupons from both locations with up to $50 worth of savings on Ohio foods. Breakfast will be served at both locations from 8- 10 a.m. to allow for riders to eat and set out on the trail at their leisure. Registration can be made online here⇒ (until the limit of 200 riders for breakfast per market is reached).

Note from Dave ~ May 2012

“Use” our merchants. In most cases our business owners are the leading experts in what they sell. Cheese, seafood, poultry, produce, baked goods, and meats. We offer the highest quality, best selection and finest expertise in town.

Visit our website to see what’s fresh and available at the Farmers’ Market. And get all the latest Market news.

Buy North Market gift certificates. They make surprisingly great gifts! Redeemable at all merchants and growers, they’re a pleasant surprise and never disappoint. Keep a “stash” around the house for last minute giving.

There’s lot’s going on at the Market these days. 400+ Market to Market bike riders will be here this Saturday. The Apron Gala, our major fund raising event, is coming up May 19th. The farmers are showing up in ever-increasing numbers (a warm Spring means an early season). Artisan Sundays begins this weekend and will continue every Sunday through October. We are bustling with activity and a trip to the Market is always invigorating. I look forward to seeing you here.

Sincerely,

David Wible, Executive Director

North Market Celebrates 16th Annual Apron Gala on Saturday, May 19

Graze on delightful and delectable appetizers, main tastes and desserts, artfully prepared by our merchants. Enjoy assorted wines, Columbus Brewing Company micro-brews, soft drinks, coffee and tea, plus live music, a silent auction and other entertaining surprises. Prizes will be awarded for the night’s best aprons and special culinary awards to merchants for their gastronomic entries. As an added special treat, Tricia Wheeler, Chef and Editor of Edible Columbus will be creating canapés in the Dispatch Kitchen throughout the evening and giving away copies of her local-foods-centric publication.

An extraordinary silent auction continues to be one of the most popular features of the evening. Up for bid are various themed packages highlighting market merchants, neighborhoods (like Downtown, the Short North, Grandview and German Village), sporting events (Blue Jackets, Columbus Crew, golf), and getaways. Each bundle will contain a host of amenities from theatre tickets and restaurant gift certificates to spa services, gourmet products and hotel stays. Attendees are encouraged to bring their checkbooks or credit cards to take advantage of the unique deals!

Tickets are available online at www.NorthMarket.com or in person during Market hours in our 2nd floor business office. Heck, you can even call us at (614) 463-9664 and we’ll mail ’em to you.

In operation since 1876, the North Market is Columbus’ only true public market. More than 30 merchants offer a wide variety of fresh produce, meat, poultry, seafood, flowers and other specialty food items. The Market also provides an international selection of freshly prepared foods, distinctive gifts and personable service from owner/operators. The North Market is open daily and located steps away from the Columbus Convention Center and Nationwide Arena.
