It’s a new year and here we go. I’ve got “Ten Thoughts for the New Year,” and ten ways to take advantage of this landmark on 59 Spruce Street:

1. Eat Fresher. Fresh food tastes better. We have an amazing array of the freshest, finest food anywhere in Columbus. Fresh, local food simply tastes better. Way better.

2. Learn more about craft brewing. Craft beer is the new wine and one of fastest growing beverage segments in the category. Jen and Collin at The Barrel and Bottle are experts in the field. They can get you started on a fun, new journey.

3. Get to know your butcher. David and Cheryl. Annmarie and Jerry. Doug, Angelo and Shawn. Red meat. Poultry and Game. Seafood. Our food comes with expert advice. Free of charge!

4. Try something new. Break your routine and try something new. Clever Crow Pizza, perhaps? Consistently rated one of the best in town. Dine-in or take and bake. True Belgian Liege-style waffles at Taste of Belgium will change the way you think about waffles…forever.

5. Tune-up your spice cabinet. I’m guessing about half of the spices in your cabinet might be classified as “antiques.” Throw them out. They’ve lost their taste and character. Slowly, but surely build a new spice cabinet with the help of Ben and Cindy at North Market Spices.

6. Buy a new kitchen gadget. On your next trip to the Market spend five minutes in North Market Cookware. Take home a new gadget that a) you never knew existed and b) will make your life in the kitchen more fun and much easier.

7. Turn up the heat. Bring home one of Cajohn’s award winning hot sauces. Put it on eggs, sandwiches, entrees. Keep it on the counter and put it on whatever you want. 8. Change your routine (and create a new one). Every Saturday morning we host groups of shoppers who gather upstairs for some social time. It is part of their routine, a ritual, you might say. They’re here EVERY Saturday to “catch-up.” Use the Market to connect with your friends. A great cup of coffee from A Touch of Earth, an Omega Artisan Baking Cinnamon roll and a little re-connecting. What could be better?

9. Get out your calendar. Once again, this year, we’ll have a schedule full of festivals and events celebrating local foods, beverages and crafts. Get them on your calendar and take advantage of the fun, great food and energy that we provide for our community.

10. Celebrate your Market! Just recently, North Market was named as one of our city’s top cultural icons. And while there are times that we might take this 136-year-old institution for granted, I’m here to tell you that North Market is one of the country’s finest public markets. This is truly a special place.

January has been rather dreary and drizzly, but we are firing things up at the North Market Fiery Foods Weekend on February 18th and 19th. From special vendors to fiery foods cooking and eating contests plus kids activities and live music there’s mild to wild fun to be had at the North Market Fiery Foods Weekend.

Special fiery foods vendors for the weekend so far include Aimee’s Blue Ribbon Spices, Bigfat’s Hot Sauce, Black Swamp Gourmet, CaJohns Flavor & Fire, Chuck Evans’ Montezuma Brand, Dragonfire Foods, Heartbreaking Dawns, Mudflats Chef Inspired Sauces, Patter Fam Sauces, Race City Sauce Works, Red Lion Spicy Foods Company and Uncle Jester’s Fine Foods. Several additional vendors are expected to join us.

Want to get directly in on the fiery foods action? Customers can take a shot at fame and fortune (OK, infamy and North Market gift certificates) in a number of contests. Make great green stuff? Then the Homemade Guacamole Contest is right up your alley. If you’ve got chops with chopped avocados, it’s the one for you. Then there’s the tried and true Amateur Salsa Contest. If you’ve got a good mix of chunky or pureed fruit or vegetable salsa, put it to the test against other homemade salsa makers. Or maybe you like to play with fire? For you we have the Amateur Hot Sauce Contest. Or one can prove their chili preparing proficiency in our ever-popular Customer Chili Cook-off (entry closed). Finally, those with iron gullets can register on the day of the event for one of the myriad fiery food eating contests including Fiery Cornbread, Jalapenos, Hot Ice Cream Sundaes and Hot Wing eating contests. All contest winners will be rewarded with gift certificates or fiery foods prize packages.

In its seventh year the Chef Chili Challenge pits local professionals against one another as contenders for the title “North Market Chili Champ 2012,” a special trophy and $200 in North Market gift certificates. Participating in the battle are market merchants, fiery foods vendors and chefs from local restaurants.

New this year: BEER! The brilliant brewers at Columbus Brewing Company and Elevator Brewing Company are each concocting a special spicy elixir just for Fiery Foods Weekend at the North Market. You’ll be able to buy simply a sample, or if you are the brave sort, a whole pint for just $4.00. Also on tap will be a couple of non-throat-burning offerings to combat the capsaicin-laden offerings that will be abundant during the weekend.

“The enthusiasm for our Fiery Foods Festival has increased exponentially over the years,” said David Wible, Executive Director of the North Market. “We are excited to be able to offer an entire weekend’s worth of activities to our capsaicin-consuming devotees!”

The North Market Fiery Foods Festival will take place on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19 and is a free event. A tasting fee of $5 on Saturday enables onlookers to sample the chilis of the professional chefs. A separate $5 tasting fee on Sunday applies to the chili by the amateur contestants. This issue includes gift ideas, menu suggestions and a host of recipes to help make your holiday season merry and bright and, of course, delicious! Here’s a sample recipe:

Bacon-Wrapped Dates by Robin Davis from the Dispatch Kitchen

This is a super simple appetizer that’s perfect for a starter at a big dinner party or one of many at a cocktail party.

18   1 x 1/4” sticks Parmesan cheese (from about a ½ pound wedge)
18   pitted dates
6     slices of bacon, cut crosswise into thirds

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Stuff a Parmesan stick into each date. Wrap with bacon. Secure with toothpick. Arrange in a shallow pan. Bake 5 minutes. Using tongs, turn dates over. Cook until bacon is crisp, about 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Serve warm.

Rhoads Farm Market We will have tomatoes, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, eggplant, peppers, beets and turnips. Soon we will preview our cut and live Christmas trees for sale at North Market. 

Rock Dove Farm  We should have fennel, scallions, baby leeks, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, kale, swiss chard, and parsley, sage, basil, mint, lemon mint.

Thomas Family Orchard We will have FIFTEEN varieties of apples and apple cider!

Toad Hill Farm   I will have arugula, lettuce mix, head lettuce, mustard, Asian stir fry mix, kale, parsley, potatoes (French fingerling, carola and blossom), winter squash (acorn, kabocha, butternut, delicata, dumpling, spaghetti ), eggplant, Tatsoi, Mizuna, Senposai (all three are mild west Asian greens in the cabbage/bok choi family and can be eaten raw or used in soup or light cooking/brazing) and ornamental corn turnips. Spinach is here!

Wayward Seed Farm We’ll have certified organic greens, sweet potatoes, winter squash, herbs and radishes. Come visit us in our new location at the north end of the pavilion!

Red Cross Blood Drive

Blood supplies a critically low in Central Ohio right now. You can help out by lending your arm and donating blood. The North Market will be holding a Blood Drive this Saturday, November 5 in the Dispatch Kitchen from 9AM to 3PM. We still have appointments available at 9AM, 9:15AM, 9:45AM, 10:30AM, 11AM and 11:30AM.  If you would like to give blood please email info@northmarket.com with your preferred appointment time, cell phone number, date of birth and your blood type (if you know it). We also take walk-ins so if you are at the North Market feel free to drop in and see if we can accomodate you!
