Ugly Tomato Contest

We all know that homegrown tomatoes are the most delicious, but they are not always the prettiest. In honor of our 20th annual Farmers’ Festival we’re paying tribute this favorite summer fruit with a somewhat wacky competition: the Ugly Tomato Contest!

This Saturday, bring your most deformed, oddly shaped, bug-infested (but not rotten) tomato specimen of any color to the Farmers’ Festival tent at 9:30 a.m. and you will have a shot at a first place prize of $50 in North Market gift certificates or the ignominious glory of second place and $25 in North Market gift certificates. To register email mmartineau@northmarket.com and then start your search for the ugliest tomato you can find! Judging will take place at 9:45. Tomato check-in will begin at 9:30.

North Market celebrates 20th Farmers’ Festival!

The North Market Farmers’ Market was established at the old market in the Quonset Hut in 1979. In 1981 the first celebration of Ohio farmers was held there and twenty years later we still have grand cause to celebrate! Come to the North Market for a Saturday of farm-tastic fun during the 20th Farmers’ Festival on Saturday, August 13th. The annual event held at the prime of the Ohio growing season will highlight bushels of locally grown farm-fresh produce, a Homemade Jam and Jelly Contest, an “Ugly Tomato” Contest, the “You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to” Chef Challenge, children’s activities, cooking demonstrations and live music.

The North Market Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest and largest in central Ohio, featuring more than 20 farmers offering an array of locally-grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, honey and herbs. “We are proud to host the longest-running farmers’ market in Columbus at the North Market each Saturday morning during the growing season,” said David Wible, Executive Director of the North Market. “As a ‘sell what you grow’ market our farmers offer high quality homegrown produce nurtured right here in Ohio and we think that’s something worth celebrating!”

How long have you been farming?
We harvested our first crop in 1974.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
The North Market has been our primary market since 1989.

What are your signature crops?
Our primary crop is apples, but we supplement them with seedless grapes, blueberries, peaches, plums, and cider.

What is important to you about selling at the North Market?
We have direct marketed our crops since 1975. Early on Muskingum, Perry, and Guernsey Counties were our farmers market of choice. Once we had our first big grape crop in 1989 we discovered a larger market was needed. A marketer in New Albany encouraged us to try North Market. Success came slowly at first. Now however, we feel a part of the North Market community.

The Thomas Family Orchard is the 8th & 9th generation since 1809 to farm Brush Creek Township in Muskimgun County. We quickly found that dairy was not for us and do not miss the baling of hay and planting of corn. Dad always said money didn’t grow on trees, but I set out to prove him wrong.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Our farm works hard to control birds with netting and raccoons with electric fencing. Our goal is to bring a quality tree or vine ripened product to our consumer.

*Saturday Sampling: Kathleen Day of Katalina’s Cafe Corner will be sampling at the Thomas Family Orchard booth from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 14.

Jam, jam, jam, jam and bread.

Thanks to all of our entrants for the Amateur Jam & Jelly contest at the Farmers’ Festival this past weekend! We ended up with SIXTEEN entries! Our intrepid judges included Jennifer Nesbitt of This Week News, Vicky Thomas of The Orchard of Bill & Vicky Thomas, Kathy Persinger of Persinger Farms and Roland Kopecky of Slow Food Columbus and recent culinary winner at Wild Goose Creative’s Bacon Camp (we hear he makes a mean pierogi).  Our first place winner was John Woods with his delectable Organic Concord Grape Jelly. Second place was taken by dynamic duo Cindy McDermitt and Alma Holbrook with their Jalapeno Jam.

A couple entrants were good enough to share their recipes to be passed along to you!

Strawberry Rhubarb Jam by Christine Rinehart and Pat Kokoczka

2 C. Strawberries

2 C. Rhubarb

Cook rhubarb with 1/2 cup of water to soften. Add crushed strawberries. Add 6 1/2 cups of sugar and 1/2 tsp. butter. Bring to a rolling roil while stirring constantly. Add pectin quickly. Return to a boil for 1 minute. Skim foam (good on crackers)…Can it!

Cherry Jam by Karen and Ernie Corsi

3 pounds cherries, stems removed, pitted & rinsed

Chop 3/4 of cherries into smaller pieces, but not minced. Leave the remainder of the cherries whole. Cook cherries in a large non-reactive pot. Add the zest and juice of 2 fresh lemons. Cook until soft, about 20 minutes. Once cooled measure the amount of cherries and juice and use 3/4 that amount of sugar. (ie., if you have 4 cups of cooked cherries add 3 cups of sugar). Stir constantly over moderate heat with a heat proof utensil (the best jam cooks quickly). Put a small plate in the freezer. Once the cherries begin to thicken and gel, test by spooning some onto the cold plate and returning to the freezer. When the plate is nudged the jam should wrinkle indicating that it is done. Add a few drops of almond extract, ladle into warm clean jars and add covers. Cool to room temperature. Place in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to complete the canning process.
