Market to Market Ride Saturday

The North Market and The Hills Market created the Market to Market ride in 2009 to celebrate Ohio-made foodstuffs, the opening of the farmers market and the start of bicycling season with a cross-town trek up and down the Olentangy River Greenway. Somewhere along the way they realized that everything is more entertaining with themes and costumes and another element of amusement was added to an already enjoyable outing. Thus May 4, 2013 version of Market to Market is hereby dubbed, “Clippers and Crew: A Celebration of Spring Sports in Columbus.”

Riders are encouraged to ride attired in the garb of their favorite local sports team. Bonus points for anyone bold enough to come costumed as mascots Crew Cat, Crash or Lou Seal. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The cost includes breakfast, a scoop of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream (at either location), an event t-shirt and a drawstring backpack filled with goodies and coupons from both locations with up to $50 worth of savings on Ohio foods. North Market Newsletter ~ December 2012

A Note From Dave

Dear North Market Shopper,

As my twelfth holiday season here at North Market is on the horizon I have lots to be thankful. For this upcoming fourth quarter will be my last here as Executive Director. I’ll be retiring from the Market this January after a rewarding and thrilling ride.

It’s been an honor and a privilege to have spent my past 12 years here. North Market has become one of our community’s most treasured landmarks and if in some small way I have helped us build upon the 137-year history of this great marketplace, it has been my pleasure.

There’s lots to be thankful for this year; first and foremost, my terrific wife and companion, Mary. Our two sons, Charlie and Geoff and their wonderful families. They make the holidays even more special.

Now, onto my other “family.” Our community of merchants and growers that make this place both unique and incredible.

I’m thankful that ten years ago Jeni Britton Bauer decided to give ice cream making one more shot when she came back to North Market after her first venture, Scream, didn’t quite make it. She opened Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and the rest, quite literally, is history. I’m thankful that David and Cheryl Smith, and Jerry Bullock and Annemarie Wong work so hard to insure that we have the best butcher and poultry shops in Columbus. Yes, they supplied our Thanksgiving turkey this year. I’m especially thankful that Doug Denny and his Fish Guys saw the opportunity that Bob Reany had created for them. They give us and Columbus the finest seafood shop around.

The entire Columbus community should be thankful for the work of Michael Jones who leads both Local Matters and The Greener Grocer. Michael is doing important work to see that we all have the opportunity to eat fresher, healthier, more nutritious food. He runs a darn good fresh produce business as well.

New entrepreneurs like Jen Burton and Collin Castore at Barrel and Bottle; Brittany Baum at brezel and Ben Walters at North Market Spices make me thankful that young, creative and energetic business owners can find a following and find their way at a place like our Market.

I’m thankful for old friends who provided the foundation for this tremendous place. Marty and Bob at Market Blooms, “Cheese” Mike at Curds & Whey, Ann at A Touch of Earth, Kay at the Cookware store, Raj and Bilan at Flavors of India and Don at Pastaria.

I’m thankful for our great growers: apples from Bill and Vicky Thomas, impeccable produce from Tim Patrick, smiles and friendship from Margaret Wince and Steve Anderson.

All wouldn’t be possible without an amazing, dedicated and loyal staff. Amy, Mary and Peggy help run this great Market and they’ve worked tirelessly to help ensure that North Market is the best experience possible for our visitors.

And I’m especially thankful for the shoppers who truly make this place great. Your support, energy, enthusiasm and dedication to North Market enable our community of family businesses and farms to not only survive, but prosper. It’s been especially rewarding to see so many devoted and familiar faces every week that I’ve been here.

There’s so much to be thankful for, but I have 12 years of extraordinary memories, so this holiday season will truly be a special one for me.

Thanks to everyone who makes North Market great.

David Wible,  Executive Director
