How long have you been farming?
Oakvale is a 5th generation dairy farm. Our family has deep agricultural roots in the Central Ohio area dating back to 1853. We appreciate where we live and we are proud to serve as stewards of the environment.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We have been coming to the North Market for six years.

What are your signature products?
Our handcrafted Farmstead Gouda is an authentic Dutch style cheese. For seven years Oakvale has provided an award winning premium cheese respected on a local and national platform. Our cheese is made solely from the milk of our grass fed registered Holstein cows. Our milk is a grade A premium quality which produces a smooth buttery gouda with a creamy texture. We make regular, aged, caraway, jalapeno, habanero heifer and smoked gouda. We have recently begun making flavored cream cheeses as well.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market Farmers Market?
We love that we are able to reach and directly interact with so many people in the Columbus area at the farmers market. Since we sample and talk to our customers face to face we receive instant and excellent feedback about whether people like our cheeses.

How did you become farmers?
We were looking for a way to supplement our income yet remain on the farm. Since our background is in dairy farming, cheesemaking seemed like a natural transition! Our daughter, Elizabeth, took a short course at the University of Wisconsin on cheesemaking. She then studied with Margaret Morris (of Glengarry Fine Cheese) in Ontario, Canada and finally, made the rounds with various cheesemakers in Vermont to hone the art of cheese production. It is now a family affair and our other daughter, Dena is our sales representative.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Our herd of Holstein dairy cows is fed a diet of hay, grass and a small amount of grain. The cows graze on 20 acres of pasture and are not given antibiotics or growth hormones. The total farm consists of 462 acres of which 400 acres are tillable and we are currently also growing soybeans and corn.

*Chef Tricia Wheeler, Editor and Publisher of Edible Columbus will be sampling Garden Tomato & Herb Bruschetta topped with Jalapeno Gouda from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Oakvale Farmstead Cheese stand this Saturday, July 31.

Isaac Barnes of Honeyrun Farm. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2010. All rights reserved. How long have you been farming?
We have been keeping bees for 7 years. We started in 2003 when Jayne bought Isaac a beehive for Christmas. We have doubled our hives every year and we now have over 100 hives.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
We have been coming to the North Market for 3 years.

What are your signature crops?
We produce pure raw honey, herbal infused honey, beeswax candles, bee pollen, comb honey, chunk honey and handcrafted soap made with our own beeswax, honey and herbs. We also sell fresh cut flowers and arrange flowers for weddings. Our signature item is our black locust honey, which we take off the hives in early Spring. It has a light, delicate taste that is unique, as not many beekeepers extract honey in early Spring. We also started a pumpkin patch this year.

Honeyrun Farm. Photo copyright Chris Graham 2009. All rights reserved. What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
We love the atmosphere of the North Market. Every vendor has such unique items to sell and the community it creates is great. We love the music, the loyal customers, the festivals, and the inside vendors, too.

How did you become farmers?
Both Isaac and Jayne grew up on farms and love working outside. Jayne met Isaac’s sister Becky at college and they dreamed up a plan to work together to grow produce someday. Becky introduced Jayne to Isaac, they got married, and eventually Honeyrun Farm was born. Now Becky handles all the produce, Isaac works with the bees, and Jayne grows flowers and makes soap.

Do you have any special farming practices?
We use no chemicals in our beehives, and practice Integrated Pest Management techniques to help our hives ward off mites and disease. We also extract our honey seasonally so that our customers can taste the different floral sources of the nectar. We currently are selling a mild, delicate Spring Honey, a dark, rich and robust flavored Fall Honey, and will be extracting Summer Honey in the next few weeks.

North Market Welcomes North Market Spices

North Market is proud to add another family-owned and operated venture to our portfolio of independent food and food-related businesses. We are proud to welcome North Market Spices, an undertaking by Ben Walters with the support of his parents Randy and Cindy.

The Walters family has always been fans of the North Market and as self-proclaimed foodies they love the selections the North Market has to offer. One Saturday afternoon while Ben and Randy were having lunch at the Market they noticed a vacant booth and proceed to discuss what type of business they hoped would fill the spot. As avid cooks, they frequently purchased raw ingredients from North Market merchants, but had to stop elsewhere for their spices. With that in mind Ben declared, “I hope they put a spice store in there!” Randy agreed that it was such a good idea that they should pursue it themselves and the two picked up an application. We agreed that a spice shop would be a great addition and North Market Spices will open in the northwest corner of the Market this August.

The mother and son team behind North Market spices brings their own experience and experiments with cooking and seasoning dishes to the table. When asked what favorite things the two like to cook Ben explains, “It depends on the season. In the summer it’s a lot of chicken and ribs using our own specially blended barbeque rub. We also enjoy making seafood paella. In the fall we like to smoke turkeys using different rubs. In the winter we enjoy traditional roasts and savory stews. In the spring our go-to dish tends to be lamb - we never make it the same way twice! You’ll always find us in the kitchen or by the grill trying a new dish. It’s amazing how trying a different spice or two can completely change the flavor of a dish.” There is no doubt that the Walters will have plenty of advice to offer about seasonings to complement dishes to be prepared by North Market shoppers.

North Market Spices will carry more than eighty varieties of top quality spices, herbs, blends and rubs from around the world with an ever-expanding line of products and discoveries. These will be offered in a space designed to represent a contemporary international market. The rich wood paneling and distressed wood is intended to be reminiscent of the crates that spices would have been shipped in by the East India Trading Company. With its broad range of aromatic offerings, North Market Spices will appeal to everyone from the casual cook to the chef extraordinaire. As ardent supporters of local businesses, they also hope to form partnerships and offer benefit to local restaurants with bulk purchasing options on spices.

The North Market looks forward to the opening of North Market Spices to round out its offerings. According to Executive Director, David Wible, “North Market Spices will fill an important niche for our shoppers. Now, in addition to the widest selection of the highest quality foods, Market visitors will have the opportunity to select from a wide variety of great spices, rubs, salts, seasonings and herbs.”

Anderson Orchard
Pickerington, Ohio

How long have you been farming?
I began farming in 1985. We planted 2,000 apple trees and 25,000 strawberry plants for a u-pick.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I started bringing apples to the north market in 1989 or 1990.

What are your signature crops?
We now sell flowers and produce in season. We start with asparagus and peonies in the spring. We grow a variety of flowers including sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, delphinium, celosia and lilies. In the fall we also have oriental pears and lots of hand made wreaths of bittersweet.
New this year is our free range pork including brats, Italian sausage, breakfast sausage, bacon and smoked pork loin.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
Knowing and having direct contact with customers is very important to me.

How did you become a farmer?
I became a farmer because it sounded fun. I didn’t realize how much work it would be.

Do you have any special farming practices?
Though we aren’t certified organic we use very few non-organic methods. I believe the land has to be treated as a living thing.

Founders of Dublin Farmers’ Market
Co-Founders of Market at 15th and High

How long have you been farming? Wayward Seed Farm was started in the late spring of 2006 as a farm-to-restaurant project on
one acre in Sandusky County, where we grew over 100 different varietals of food.

How long have you been coming to North Market?ďż˝
We started at North Market that same year.

What are your signature crops? Always our root vegetable. We’ve made a particular effort to really get to know our soil, and embrace what flourishes best where. Root vegetables grow incredibly well in our loam soils. They’re also great for storage, which is important in our region.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market? It’s where we got our start. We have an incredible base of weekly customers, along with new ones.

How did you become farmers? Adam and I settled in Columbus after graduating from Ohio State. And we’ve always been passionate about food. When Adam was working at Curds & Whey, we had the fortune to do some traveling. Here we were, enjoying amazing food from different parts of the country, and realized we wanted to be able to offer the same quality of heirloom and heritage vegetables back home in Ohio.

From there, Wayward Seed Farm began as a farm-to-restaurant project on one acre, where we grew over 100 different varietals of food in an attempt to find the best products for local chefs. In addition to serving restaurants, we soon saw a real need in the community for a more direct connection between consumers searching for honestly grown produce and the farms that provide it. Then we expanded to farmers’ markets and then to our CSA program.

Do you have any special farming practices?
The Wayward Seed Farm utilizes three main farming principles: raised beds, composting and proper crop rotation. Plants are given a healthy foliar feeding program of seaweed, fish emulsion and humus. To maintain a healthy balance, we apply various rock powders, cover crops and aged compost throughout the year. Our philosophy is simple; return the fertility you remove by farming.

Note from Dave ~ July

Dear North Market Shoppers,

It’s on! While the weather heats up in June and it “feels” like summer, all the traditional gifts of the season don’t really appear until July.

Corn pile! Photo copyright Chris Graham 2007. All rights reserved.Sweet corn is here, tomatoes, too. Fresh picked fruits and berries, melons not far behind. Zucchini, eggplant and peppers. It’s Farmers Market time!

While our Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning, the real work begins the day before as our community of growers take to their fields to carefully pick only what’s ready for sale the next morning. No industrial coolers, no cross country or international shipping, just fresh, honest and delicious fruits and vegetables from our neighboring counties.

And something else you should know. Everything our growers sell, they grow. That’s not always the case at other markets. Each and every grower has made the commitment to you that what they sell is what they grow. It makes a difference.

July also brings us the North Market Food and Ohio Wine Festival, July 9-11. By far, our biggest and best event of the year, the Ohio Wine Festival gives our shoppers the opportunity to taste a broad selection of locally produced wines. If you’re into buying local, Ohio wine is a great choice.

Inside the Market House things are humming nicely, as well. Omega Artisan Bakery’s sinful cinnamon rolls were just awarded the “Best Breakfast Item” in Ohio by Food Network Magazine (July/August issue). Columbus Monthly’s readers recognized Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams as the Market’s best vendor and the magazine even recognized Taste of Belgium for the best message on Twitter. Our Market to Market bike ride held in October (then repeated this past May 1st with another one coming up October 2nd) was also recognized by Columbus Monthly as the “best bike ride for foodies.”

Lot’s happening at the Market, but would you expect anything less from our nearly 70 growers, bakers, butchers, grocers, and food artisans?

Come on down this July and get a taste of the action.

How long have you been farming?
I have been farming for 17 years.

How long have you been coming to North Market?
I have been coming to the North Market since 1997.

What are your signature crops?
I specialize in gourmet lettuce mixes, heirloom tomatoes and cherry tomato mixes.

What is important to you about selling your items at the North Market?
I love talking to people about food and farming, hearing their likes and dislikes and sharing my farm news. The market recharges me for another week in the fields.

How did you become a farmer?
Even as a kid growing up 35 miles outside New York City, I wanted a patch of land in the country. I started “farming” on one-fifth of an acre in my Columbus backyard. When I ran out of yard, I bought a farm in Johnstown and a 50-year-old tractor. Six years ago, I moved to a 67-acre farm in Washington Court House. I’ve learned most of what I know from other farmers and through trial and error. I now grow 7 acres of produce. I love the hard work farming demands, its mental challenges and the sense of accomplishment that comes with each week’s harvest.

Do you have any special farming practices?
I don’t use any chemical pesticides.
